Which Madrid apartment is suitable for me?
As there are many types of flat or apartment (piso or apartamento) available in Madrid, it's important to choose your accommodation with some appropriate fixed criteria. Here is some advice and information on what to expect from self-catering accommodation and what things you should watch out for.
How many persons make up your group?
Are you on a short, weekend break to Madrid with your spouse or partner, on a family holiday or with a group of relatives or friends, or are you on a business trip and staying on your own? The information offered by the rental agency on any rental accommodation should offer full details of the number of bedrooms available, and how the beds are configured. While some apartments may sleep four persons, two of these people may have to sleep on a sofa-bed, and that may not suit everyone.
Also for larger groups or families, it is often a good idea to find an apartment with more than one bathroom.

On which floor is the accommodation?
Apartments on lower floors are frequently more noisy, especially if they are in popular tourist areas such as the area around Hurertas and the Plaza Mayor. If you're travelling with small children or someone with mobility difficulties, you should ensure that the building has an elevator. If in doubt, phone the rental agency or landlord who will be delighted to inform you.
What facilities are included?
If you envisage an extended stay, make sure that the accommodation has a washing machine, and, if there is no terrace or balcony and you to plan to visit in the colder months, a tumble dryer. If not you will have to depend on local laundromats or external laundry services.
For longer stays a terrace or large balcony will add a lot of comfort to the apartment. It's like having an extra room and you'll be able to dine outdoors in privacy without having always to resort to restaurants. For that reason, if you want to do your own cooking, you should also find out on the kitchen equipment.
What services are available in the apartment?
If you're going to stay for, say, more than seven days, make sure there is a cleaning service available and the additional cost if any. Should you require more frequent cleaning, find out from the landlord or rental agency how this should best be arranged. Confirm also if there will be any additional charges for cleaning at the end of your visit, and when you will be expected to pay.
Bed linen and bathroom towels are normally provided during your trip. As the landlord or rental agency to confirm how often these items will be changed.
